Is Kava Kava Safe For My Liver?
Is kava safe for your liver? The question of whether kava kava is safe for consumption has been around since 2002 when Germany issued a warning that kava could cause liver problems. The rest of the world took note on this because Germany is well known for herbal research. Some countries such as the United Kingdom and France decided to ban the commercial sale of kava products to err on the side of caution.
No proof has ever been presented that kava causes liver damage. The World Health Organization recently completed a study on the hepatotoxicity of kava products and concluded that kava products made using cold water extraction techniques seemed to be safe and all others were not recommended.
In order to ensure your safety you should not consume kava in conjunction with alcohol or pharmaceuticals that are taxing on the liver. Drinking kava that is made using cold water seems to be the safest way to consume kava. Natives of the south Pacific do not have liver problems and they have been drinking kava for thousands of years this way.
